Blessings Counted

Lunch today was at a restaurant in Soho. It offered a standard two-course lunch for £8, and one could choose from a large range of starters and mains. I decided on home-made tomato soup, followed by braised veal cheeks with mashed potato and a garden salad. I sat in the window and gazed out at the passing parade scuttling by in the light drizzle that had just begun to drift down from a sky the colour of lead. As my meal arrived at the table I counted myself very fortunate indeed to be sitting there, in the centre of the civilised world, about to tuck into half a baby cow's face.

'Moo!'
